Hadiths on the Day of Judgment

The Weight of a Person on the Day of Judgment

English Translation

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) as saying
“A bulky person would be brought on the Day of Judgment, and he would not carry the weight to the eye of Allah equal even to that of a gnat. Nor shall We set up a balance for them on the Day of Resurrection” (Surah Al-Kahf 18:105).

Key Points from Hadith

This hadith emphasizes that the value of a person is not determined by their physical size or stature in this world but by their deeds. Even if someone appears grand or significant on Earth, their actions may hold no weight on the Day of Judgment.

Allah will not set a balance for those whose deeds are empty of true faith and good actions. This means that those who live without faith or righteousness will have no worth in the hereafter.

A key lesson from this hadith is the importance of sincerity and devotion to Allah. If one’s deeds are devoid of sincerity, they are weightless, no matter how many good actions they seem to have performed.

Allah’s Power on the Day of Judgment

English Translation

Abdullah b. Mas’ud reported that a Jewish scholar came to Allah’s Apostle (peace be upon him) and said,
“Muhammad, or Abu al-Qasim, verify, Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, would carry the Heavens on the Day of Judgment upon one finger and the Earth upon one finger, and the mountains and trees upon one finger, and the ocean and moist Earth upon one finger—in fact, the whole of creation upon one finger. Then He would stir them and say: I am your Lord, I am your Lord.” Thereupon Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) smiled, testifying what the scholar had said. He then recited the verse:
“And they honor not Allah with the honor due to Him; and the whole Earth will be in His grip on the Day of Resurrection, and the Heavens rolled up in His right hand. Glory be to Him and highly exalted is He above what they associate with Him.” (Surah Az-Zumar 39:67).

Key Points from Hadith

This hadith highlights the overwhelming power of Allah, who will control all creation effortlessly on the Day of Judgment. The scholar’s description underscores that no one can fully comprehend the majesty and might of Allah.

Allah’s ability to hold the heavens, the earth, and all creation in His fingers is a reminder to humans of their smallness and dependence on Him. It encourages humility and reverence in worship.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) smiled in agreement with the Jewish scholar’s words and emphasized that many fail to honour Allah as He deserves. This hadith urges believers to reflect on the greatness of Allah and the need to acknowledge His supreme authority.

The Sun’s Closeness on the Day of Judgment

English Translation

Al-Miqdad bin Aswad reported that he heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) say:
“On the Day of Judgment, the sun will come so close to people that it will be only a mile away from them. People will be submerged in sweat according to their deeds. Some will be covered in sweat up to their ankles, some up to their knees, some up to their waists, and some will be submerged in sweat entirely. The Messenger of Allah pointed his hand towards his mouth.” (Sahih Muslim)

Key Points from Hadith

On the Day of Judgment, one of the terrifying signs is the sun’s proximity to the Earth, so close that it will be just a mile away. This signifies the intense heat and pressure people will experience as they await judgment.

People’s actions in this life will determine how much they suffer in the heat. Their sweat will rise in proportion to the gravity of their deeds. Some will find it unbearable, submerged in sweat, while others will experience lesser degrees of discomfort. This teaches the profound impact of one’s actions on their fate in the Hereafter.

The imagery in this hadith serves as a vivid reminder that everyone will be held accountable for their actions. The Day of Judgment will be a day of extreme trials, where deeds, good or bad, will be visible and affect how one experiences the consequences

The Intercession of the Prophet (peace be upon him) on the Day of Judgment

English Translation

Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said,
“I am the first for whom the grave will be opened, the first to intercede, and the first to be permitted to intercede.” (Sahih Muslim)

He also said
“Every prophet has a special prayer, but I have kept mine to intercede for my Ummah on the Day of Judgment. My intercession will be for those who sincerely believe in Allah.”

Key Points from Hadith

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) holds a unique position among all prophets. He will be granted the honour of interceding for his Ummah on the Day of Judgment. His intercession will offer relief and hope to believers when no one else can assist them

While other prophets used their special prayers in this world, the Prophet (peace be upon him) reserved his prayer to benefit his followers in the Hereafter. His selfless love for his Ummah is demonstrated through his desire to seek forgiveness for their sins and shortcomings.

The hadith emphasizes that only those who sincerely believe in Allah will benefit from this intercession. It highlights the importance of pure faith and devotion to Allah in ensuring salvation on the Day of Judgment.

The Shade on the Day of Judgment

English Translation

Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said
“Seven types of people will be shaded by Allah under His shade on the Day when there will be no shade except His. They are
A just ruler.
A young person who grows up in the worship of Allah.
A person whose heart is attached to the mosque.
Two people who love each other for the sake of Allah and meet and part for that reason.
A man is invited by a woman of beauty and position (to sin), but he says: ‘I fear Allah.’
A person who gives charity so secretly that his left-hand does not know what his right hand has given.
A person who remembers Allah in solitude and his eyes overflow with tears.” (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)

Key Points from Hadith

This hadith highlights the importance of particular types of good deeds and personal qualities. These seven groups of people, who are chosen to receive Allah’s protection on the Day of Judgment, demonstrate strong faith, self-discipline, and devotion in their unique ways. Each person mentioned in this hadith has shown a deep commitment to Allah’s commands in difficult circumstances.

The qualities listed are crucial in Islam. Justice, particularly from those in positions of authority, is emphasized, along with the importance of worship and regular charity. These individuals exemplify selflessness, discretion, and piety, which are highly rewarded by Allah.

Several examples in this hadith underline moral integrity and the fear of Allah. Whether it is resisting temptation, giving charity secretly, or forming relationships purely for the sake of Allah, each example represents a different way in which believers can show their devotion

English Translation

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“The feet of a servant will not move on the Day of Judgment until he is asked about four things:
His life and how he spent it,
His youth and how he used it,
His wealth and how he earned and spent it,
His knowledge and what he did with it.” (Sunan at-Tirmidhi)

Key Points from Hadith

This hadith makes it clear that every individual will face accountability in four crucial aspects of life: their lifespan, their youth, their wealth, and their knowledge. This shows the importance of living a mindful, purposeful life where every action is aligned with what pleases Allah.

The mention of youth separately from the rest of life shows the significance of how young people spend their time. It is a period often associated with energy and passion, and Allah will question how this time was utilized—whether in obedience or indulgence

Both the earning and spending of wealth will be questioned, highlighting the importance of ethical earning and the obligation to use wealth in ways that benefit others and align with Islamic principles. Greed, extravagance, and hoarding are all warned against.

Knowing what is right but failing to act upon it is a serious issue. The hadith stresses that knowledge brings responsibility, and believers will be questioned about how they applied the knowledge they acquired, emphasizing the importance of both learning and practicing Islam.

Conclusion

The hadiths discussed throughout this article highlight essential aspects of Islamic teachings, offering profound insights into faith, morality, and the relationship between humans and Allah. From the reminders about the significance of pure intentions to the overwhelming mercy of Allah, these hadiths serve as timeless lessons for believers.

The mercy Allah has bestowed upon His creation is immeasurable. He has kept the vast majority of it with Himself, with only a small portion sent to the earth, and yet that small portion is enough to inspire compassion in all creatures. This reminds us that Allah’s mercy is vast and all-encompassing, and we should reflect this attribute by being merciful to others.

The hadiths on seeking forgiveness and how even the smallest act of kindness can lead to immense reward remind us that no good deed is too small in the sight of Allah. The emphasis is placed on not just doing good, but doing it for the right reasons — to please Allah alone. Every person is responsible for their deeds, and these hadiths guide us to regularly reflect on our actions. We are encouraged to maintain a close connection with Allah, consistently seeking forgiveness, and striving for sincerity in every aspect of our lives.

These hadiths collectively call for believers to maintain a high standard of moral and ethical conduct, rooted in compassion, sincerity, and devotion to Allah. They provide a pathway to leading a life that not only benefits oneself but also contributes positively to society by promoting mercy, empathy, and humility. By understanding and implementing these teachings, Muslims can hope to attain both worldly success and eternal reward in the hereafter.
